Summer Fellowship FAQ
Is the fellowship a full-time opportunity?
Yes. This fellowship requires a full-time work commitment and is not compatible with other employment schedules that can impede on it.
Is the fellowship virtual or in-person?
Recently, many of our Summer Fellows have done the work placement and webinar attendance part of the fellowship virtually (work-from-home arrangements). However, we expect Summer Fellows to attend Freedom Week—an in-person event.
Is this opportunity available to non-Canadians or those outside of Canada?
All applicants should be eligible to work in Canada—whether they are a Canadian citizen, studying in Canada, or from abroad.
The ILS cannot help with—or provide advice on—work visas.
I want to apply, but I have other summer academic/employment committments. Can the fellowship be flexible?
The Summer Fellowship is designed as a full-time employment opportunity to gain work experience. The fellowship cannot be modified or re-arranged to fit around other academic or employment commitments an interested applicant might have.
When do you conduct interviews? And, when do you select applicants?
We expect to conduct virtual interviews in March. Successful applicants will receive offers of placement by the end of April.
If I become a Summer Fellow, do I choose what organization I am placed with?
No. Summer Fellows do not choose what organization they are placed with. If you are offered a place in the program it will specify placement you are being offered.
I was a Summer Fellow before. Can I apply again?
Previous participants in the Summer Fellowship program are not eligible to participate again.
I applied before, but did not get accepted. Should I apply again?
Students who have applied previously but were not accepted are welcome to apply again.
